Christmas Light Installation

Christmas light installation cost per foot sounds like the simplest number in the world. Measure the house, multiply, done. Then you get two quotes for the same Michigan home and they are hundreds of dollars apart.

A homeowner in Pinckney told us last October his roofline was “about 120 feet, tops.” He had paced it off along the front of the house. We pulled out the laser measure, went around once, and it came to 195. Two gables and a dormer he had never really thought about. Nobody was wrong. That is just what happens when you measure the way installers do.

So let’s walk through how the per-foot math really works, the same way we explain it on our jobs.

Christmas Light Installation Cost Per Foot: The Short Answer

In Michigan, christmas light installation cost per foot runs $2 to $7 for labor-only work on lights you own, and $5 to $12 per foot for full-service installation that includes commercial-grade LED lights, maintenance, takedown and storage. A typical 150 to 250 foot roofline lands between $800 and $2,400 depending on height and complexity.

The rate alone is only half the answer, though. The other half is how many feet you actually have.

What Counts as a “Foot”? How Installers Measure Your Roofline

When we measure a house, we are not measuring the footprint. We are measuring every line that will carry a bulb.

Eaves, gables, ridgelines and dormers

A plain ranch is mostly eaves. A two-story colonial with a couple of peaks and dormers can almost double its footage in slopes alone.

Why your house measures longer than you think

Sloped lines are longer than they look from the driveway. A gable that seems like 15 feet across is often 20 to 24 feet once you follow both sides up to the peak.

That is exactly what happened in Pinckney. The front eave was close to his 120 guess. The two gables and the dormer added the other 75.

Quick self-measure method

You can get a close estimate before you call anyone. Here is the rough method we share with homeowners:

  1. Use your garage door as a ruler. A standard two-car door is about 16 feet wide, a single door about 8 or 9 feet. Count how many “doors” fit along each eave.
  2. Check it from above. Google Earth has a free measure tool. Trace your roof edges and it gives you the length.
  3. Add up only the lines you want lit, usually the front and maybe the sides.
  4. Add 15 to 30 percent for peaks and dormers on a typical two-story. Use the higher end if you have steep gables.

That number will be close. It will rarely be exact, and that is fine. It gets you into the right price range.

What Is Inside the Per-Foot Price

A foot price is really three prices stacked together. Labor-only quotes include one of them. Full-service quotes include all three.

ComponentTypical per-foot shareWhat it covers
Labor$2 to $5Ladder work, clipping, connections, safety setup
Product$1 to $4 equivalentCommercial-grade C9 LED bulbs and wire, custom cut
ServiceFolded into the totalIn-season repairs, takedown, storage

Labor: $2 to $5 per foot

This is the crew’s time and risk. It is also the only piece a labor-only installer charges for. Angi puts it at $2 to $5 per foot, and Michigan installers like Wolverine Low Voltage report $2.50 to $7 once you include harder roofs.

Commercial-grade C9 LED product: $1 to $4 per foot equivalent

HomeAdvisor lists bulbs at $0.50 to $2 per foot on top of labor, but that is mostly retail-grade product. Commercial C9 LEDs cost more up front. They are brighter, handle Michigan winters much better, and last many more seasons.

With us, you never buy them. They are part of the price, and they come back to our warehouse after the season.

Service: repairs, takedown and storage folded in

This is the piece most per-foot guides leave out. HomeAdvisor puts removal alone at about $0.50 per foot when it is billed separately.

On our jobs, a 48-hour repair guarantee, January takedown and heated warehouse storage are all built into one bundled number. That is why full-service companies usually quote a package, not a line-item foot rate.

Michigan Factors That Move the Per-Foot Rate

A foot of roofline in Michigan is not the same as a foot in Florida. Here is what changes it.

Two-story and steep-pitch rooflines

Snow country builds steeper roofs so snow slides off. That is great for the house and harder for the crew. More height and more pitch mean more safety setup and slower work per foot.

Snow-season scheduling and crew safety

We schedule installs around wind, rain and early snow. An icy morning can push a job a day or two. That weather flexibility is part of what you pay for, and it is why booking in October helps.

Complex Victorians and lakefront homes vs simple ranches

A ranch in Fowlerville with one straight eave is fast, clean footage. An older Victorian with turrets, or a lakefront home with multiple rooflines facing the water, takes far more cutting and fitting per foot.

Minimum job fees: why 60 feet does not cost 60 x $5

Most installers across the industry set a minimum job fee, usually $150 to $300. It covers the truck, the crew and the setup, no matter how small the job is.

So a 60-foot roofline at $5 per foot is not $300 of pure lights. The minimum absorbs most of it. That is why very small jobs always look expensive per foot.

Worked Example: Pricing a 195-Foot Two-Story in Livingston County

Let’s use the Pinckney house, since we already know its footage.

Step 1: Footage. 195 feet, including the front eave, two gables and one dormer.

Step 2: Rate. It is a two-story with moderately steep gables, so a blended full-service rate of about $7 to $9.50 per foot is realistic.

Step 3: Math.

Landing zone: roughly $1,300 to $1,900.

That range covered everything:

To be clear, this is an illustrative example. Your pitch, your add-ons and your color choices will move it. An on-site measure and a rendering are what give you the exact number.

Per-Foot Pricing vs Package Pricing: Which Is Better for You

Per-foot pricing feels transparent. In practice, it often leads to surprises when the measured footage comes in higher than the homeowner expected.

That is why we quote packages. Our budget tiers run from under $1,000 up to $3,000 plus, and we design to the tier you are comfortable with. You see the rendering, you see one price, and that is the price.

As we tell people on estimates, we would rather you know the total than try to do algebra on your roof. The per-foot math is still useful. It just works best as a sanity check, not as the final quote.

FAQ

How much does it cost per foot to have Christmas lights installed in Michigan?

Labor-only installation in Michigan runs about $2 to $7 per foot. Full-service installation, with lights, repairs, takedown and storage included, runs about $5 to $12 per foot. Height, pitch and add-ons decide where your home falls.

Do installers charge per foot for trees and wreaths too?

Usually not. Trees are typically priced by size or by the number of wraps, and wreaths and garland are priced per piece. That is why a roofline per-foot number never tells the whole story if you want ground-level lighting too.

How many linear feet is an average 2,000 square foot house?

On our jobs, a 2,000 square foot home usually measures somewhere around 140 to 220 linear feet of lightable roofline. A single-story has more eave, a two-story has more peaks. Footprint and roof style matter more than square footage.

Why did two companies quote different footage for the same house?

One company may have measured only the front eave, while the other included gables and dormers. Or one plans to light the sides and the other does not. Ask each company exactly which lines they measured. The christmas light installation cost per foot only compares fairly once the footage matches.

Is takedown charged per foot?

With labor-only installers, it often is, at around $0.50 per foot or a flat $100 to $400. With full-service companies like ours, takedown and storage are already included in the price.
